Strata Channel Strip

Multi-channel EQ and dynamics channel strip that runs entirely inside the Q-SYS Core. Per-channel filters, gate, parametric EQ, compressor, and limiter with live curves, a real-time analyzer, and a bundled Strip Selector companion.

01.Introduction

Strata Channel Strip is a Q-SYS plugin that gives every channel in your design a complete channel strip - high-pass and low-pass filters, a noise gate, parametric EQ, a compressor, and a peak limiter - with live visual feedback drawn right on the plugin: the EQ response curve, a real-time analyzer, and a dynamics transfer curve with a live operating dot.

Everything runs as native DSP inside the Q-SYS Core. The plugin does not connect to any external device or network - there is no IP address to configure, nothing to go offline, and no connection to drop.

That configuration also produces a tall schematic block, one audio pin per input path per channel, which is cosmetic. The demo also runs in the Designer emulator.

03.Installation

The Strata package contains two plugin files:

Copy the plugin files

Copy each .qplugx file into Documents\QSC\Q-Sys Designer\Plugins\. A subfolder works; Designer scans the folder recursively. Double-clicking a file also installs it, into the Plugins folder itself. The plugin appears in Schematic Elements under Plugins, Fresh AV Labs.

Add it to the design

Drag the plugin from Schematic Elements into the design.

04.Quick Start

Add the strip and set its structure

Drag Strata Channel Strip into the design. Set Channels and Bands, then set Enable Gate and Enable Limiter for the modules you want. The block shows one input pin and one output pin per channel.

Wire the audio

Wire the source into Channel N Input 1. Wire Channel N Output 1 onward to your mixer or output block. The Dynamics page IN and OUT meters move when audio runs.

Push the design or emulate it

Push the design to the Core, or emulate it. The LICENSE box counts down, or reads ACTIVATED, and the status bar reads OK. Without a code the plugin runs a 10-minute demo, see Licensing.

Tune a channel

Pick a channel in the NAVIGATION strip. Shape it on the EQ page, then set the gate, compressor and limiter on the Dynamics page. The curves redraw as the values change.

Add the Strip Selector

Drag Strata Strip Selector into the design and set the Channel Strip's Script Access to All. With one strip in the design the Selector links by itself: the Linked LED lights and the status bar reads OK. With more than one strip, the status bar names the conflict. Pick the strip's Code Name in the STRATA COMPONENT dropdown. See Link status.

Only one graph animates at a time; Active Page picks it, see Which graph is live.

05.Plugin Properties

Properties are set in Q-SYS Designer with the plugin selected. They define the compiled structure of the plugin - changing them rebuilds the embedded DSP when you next push the design.

Behavior

06.Multi-channel Inputs

Each channel strip can process up to 8 parallel audio paths through its single set of settings. Use it wherever several signals should be processed identically: stereo pairs, multi-zone feeds of the same program, or a set of matched lav mics.

Enabling

Turn on Multi-channel

Set the Multi-channel property to Yes. A Channel N Inputs row appears for each channel.

Set the path count per channel

Set Channel N Inputs from 1 to 8 for each channel that needs parallel paths. A channel left at 1 behaves as before.

Wire the new pins

Wire the added Channel N Input 1..K and Channel N Output 1..K pins, one pair per path.

How it behaves

  • One set of settings. All paths of a channel share the channel's controls - EQ, dynamics, filters, bypass, and copy/paste apply to every path at once. There are no per-path controls, by design; use separate channels when signals need independent processing.
  • Linked dynamics. The gate, compressor, and limiter use one shared detector across all of a channel's paths. Signal on any path drives the same gain reduction (or gate opening) applied to every path together, so levels stay matched and a stereo pair stays centered.
  • Metering shows the loudest path. The input meter follows the channel's hottest input path and the output meter its hottest output path (a worst-case view). The gain-reduction bar, gate LED, and limiter indicator show the channel's one shared dynamics state.
  • RTA and Monitor follow path 1. The analyzer, the monitor bus, and the dynamics operating dot listen to the channel's first path.

Changing a channel's path count later

Pin naming is stable by design. Raising a channel's Inputs count only adds the new higher-numbered pins - existing pins keep their names and their wiring. Lowering the count removes the surplus top pins (their wiring is dropped, as it must be). Other channels are never affected.

07.Licensing

The plugin reads Activation_Code and Activation_Code_Backup when the design starts.

What demo expiry stops

Strata is a fail-safe audio processor. Every channel switches to a clean safety bypass, so audio keeps passing unprocessed and the system never goes silent. Processing controls gray out, and an edit from a pin or a UCI is rejected, with the displayed value snapping back to the bypassed state. Navigation, channel names, the graphs, the meters, the RTA display and Monitor all stay live, so you can still look around. If your gain structure depends on the strip's compression or filtering, plan your evaluation window accordingly.

Activate

Read the Core's Locking ID

Set Show_Locking_ID to Yes and push the design. The Locking ID appears in the LOCKING ID box. Core Manager also shows it under Licensing, for any Core, with no design change. The Designer emulator reports EMULATOR or *100000000000000. The plugin marks it as not a Core ID. No code can be made for it.

Get a code for that Locking ID

Buy or request an activation code at freshavlabs.com, quoting the Locking ID exactly.

Enter the code and push the design

Paste the code into Activation_Code and push the design. The LICENSE box reads ACTIVATED. The plugin compares only the digits of the code, so punctuation and spaces do not matter. A code entered on a running design applies at the next design start.

License status

Q-SYS prefixes the LICENSE box text with its own status word, so the box reads OK - ACTIVATED or Compromised - DEMO: 9:59 remaining.

At expiry the plugin's Status control also reads Fault - License required - demo expired, so a Status Combiner sees the fault.

08.The Plugin Panel

The plugin has three pages, selected with the tabs at the top of the block in Designer: EQ, Dynamics, and Config. The header, status bar, and NAVIGATION strip appear on every page.

  • LOCKING ID - above the LICENSE box, when Show_Locking_ID is Yes. See Licensing.
  • LICENSE - the live license state. See Licensing.
  • Refresh - see below.

The Refresh button

Refresh re-reads the selected channel's settings from the processor - all EQ bands, filters, gate, compressor and limiter - and redraws both curves to match. It repaints the panel and changes no audio processing, and it still works after the demo has expired. Press it when a channel was changed from outside this panel and the on-screen values or curves look out of date. A control system, a script writing to pins, or a snapshot recall can all do that. You rarely need it otherwise: selecting a channel pulls that channel's values, and editing a control redraws the curves live.

Status bar

The full-width bar under the header reflects the plugin's overall state. OK is normal. It also carries informational notes (for example Paste skipped - clipboard empty) and the license fault after demo expiry.

Which graph is live

The plugin animates one graph at a time to keep DSP script load low. The Active Page value (a dropdown on the Config page, also a control pin) selects it:

  • 1 - EQ: the RTA spectrum animates on the EQ graph.
  • 2 - Dynamics: the operating dot animates on the dynamics curve.

Curve shapes always redraw immediately when you edit values, and the level meters always run - Active Page only gates the continuously-animating elements. The Strip Selector sets Active Page automatically when you pick a view; in a custom UCI, have your tab buttons set it (1 or 2) to match the visible layer.

09.EQ Page

The EQ graph

The graph shows the channel's composite frequency response - all EQ bands plus the HPF/LPF roll-offs - from 20 Hz to 20 kHz, with a +/-20 dB display range. (Bands and the HPF can be tuned down to 10 Hz; anything below 20 Hz plots at the graph's left edge.) Three view toggles (in VIEW & OPS) control what's drawn:

BANDS grid

One row per EQ band. Value fields are drag-to-slide: drag up/down to sweep, or click and type an exact value.

The field colors (green frequency, blue gain, yellow Q) match Q-SYS's native parametric EQ, so the grid reads like the EQ block you already know. The Copy / Paste / Bypass buttons in the card's title row are EQ-scoped: copy and paste move the whole EQ section - all bands, the EQ master bypass, and the HPF/LPF settings - between channels, and Bypass is the EQ master bypass for the selected channel.

FOCUSED BAND strip

The focused-band strip edits one band at a time with fader-style controls - the same controls a compact UCI would use:

  • Band buttons 1..N pick the focused band. Editing any value in the BANDS grid also focuses that band, so the enlarged dot always tracks what you're adjusting.
  • FREQ / GAIN / Q faders adjust the focused band.
  • Bell / Low Shelf / High Shelf segmented buttons set its type.
  • Bypass bypasses the focused band.

FILTERS

Shown when Enable HPF / Enable LPF are on:

Filter slopes are fixed at design time by the HPF Slope / LPF Slope properties (12-96 dB/oct). The graph draws the roll-offs at the compiled slope.

VIEW & OPS

Besides the RTA / Labels / Points view toggles described above:

Flatten (2s) - press and hold for 2 full seconds to reset all of the selected channel's band gains to 0 dB. Frequencies, Q values, band types, and filters are not touched. Releasing early cancels, so an accidental tap does nothing.

10.Dynamics Page

The dynamics graph

The graph plots the channel's input-to-output transfer curve, both axes -60 to 0 dB, with a dashed 1:1 reference diagonal. Overlaid on it:

  • Dashed threshold markers: a vertical slate-blue line at the compressor threshold, a vertical green line at the gate threshold, and a horizontal red line at the limiter ceiling. A bypassed or disabled module drops out of the curve and its marker disappears. A threshold set above 0 dB draws at the graph's edge.
  • Live operating dot: the compressor's current input level plotted against its output. Animates while Active Page is 2.

On a channel with several paths the meters read as Multi-channel Inputs describes. The METERS card also holds two channel-wide buttons:

  • Bypass All - bypasses every processing module of the selected channel (filters, gate, EQ, compressor, limiter) in one press. The button lights only when everything is bypassed, so it doubles as an "is anything processing?" indicator.
  • Monitor (when Enable Monitor is Yes) - routes the selected channel's processed output to the plugin's Monitor Output audio pin, and follows you as you switch channels. Wire Monitor Output to a cue speaker or headphone feed for one-button solo while tuning.

Shared card features

  • Time readouts. The small gray text under each ATTACK / HOLD / RELEASE field shows the value as milliseconds or seconds (10 ms, 2 s).
  • Copy / Paste / Bypass in each card's title row are scoped to that card: copy just the compressor to another channel, just the gate, or just the limiter. Bypass bypasses that module only. If you paste a section that was never copied (or whose module is disabled), the status bar notes Paste skipped and nothing changes.

If nobody touches the panel for the timeout period while the spectrum is running, the plugin turns the RTA view toggle off by itself. Any interaction resets the countdown, and pressing RTA on the EQ page brings the spectrum straight back.

Five text fields re-theme the graphs. Each accepts an HTML color name (white, orange) or hex value (#2AA8E0), and the graphs repaint immediately:

Clearing a field restores its default at the next design start.

CHANNEL NAMES

One name field per channel. Names appear in the NAVIGATION strip's NAME box for the selected channel and are available as control pins, so a UCI can label its channel tabs from the same source. Naming channels (Pastor Lav, Pulpit, Playback L) makes the whole panel easier to drive.

12.Strip Selector

Strata Strip Selector is the free companion plugin included in the package. It puts a compact button grid in front of a Strata Channel Strip: one row per processing view, one column per channel. Pressing a button selects that channel on the strip and switches it to the right view - press 3 in the COMP row and the Channel Strip jumps to channel 3 with the Dynamics view live.

Use it as a fast admin surface in Designer, or pin its buttons into a UCI as ready-made "channel + view" selectors alongside the strip's graphs.

The button grid

  • Rows are the processing views you enabled: EQ and FILT switch the strip to its EQ view (green buttons); COMP, GATE, and LIM switch it to the Dynamics view (blue buttons). Rows that share a view differ only in which row's LED lights - the strip shows its full EQ or Dynamics page either way, so the lit row also tells you what kind of work is in progress.
  • Exactly one button is active at a time across the whole grid (radio behavior). Pressing the active button off leaves the strip where it was.
  • Each row's LED lights when that row holds the active selection - at a glance, you can see which view the strip is on.
  • The processing-view buttons are disabled whenever the Selector isn't linked to a strip. The Close button, the custom rows, Refresh and the STRATA COMPONENT dropdown stay available.
  • Close clears every button in the grid, leaving nothing selected. It only clears the Selector's own buttons - the strip stays on whatever channel and view it was last sent to.

Custom rows

Set Custom Controls to Yes to add up to four extra button rows of your own, sized by Custom Control Count. They look and behave like the processing rows and join the same radio (one active button across the whole grid), but they drive nothing on the Channel Strip - selecting one leaves the strip exactly where it was.

They exist so a UCI or schematic logic has ready-made per-channel buttons that follow the same one-at-a-time rule as the rest of the grid: mute-style toggles, a "channel in use" tally, a room-select row. Because they never touch the strip, they keep working while the Selector is unlinked.

Custom row labels

A row's label sets both the text drawn on the panel row and that row's pin names (MY ROW~Ch 1, MY ROW~Ch 2, and so on, one per channel). Pin names must stay unique, so the Selector cleans up what you type: a ~ becomes -, and leading and trailing spaces are trimmed. Spaces inside the label are kept.

A label is rejected and replaced with CUS n, where n is the row number, when it is:

  • Empty.
  • A reserved pin-group name: LEDs, Link, Connection, Selection.
  • A processing-row name: EQ, COMP, GATE, LIM, FILT. These are reserved whether or not that row is shown, so toggling Show EQ never renames an unrelated custom row.
  • Another row's default name, such as CUS 2 typed into row 1. All four defaults are reserved even when you show fewer rows. A row's own name is kept as typed.
  • Already used by an earlier custom row.

Matching ignores case: eq is rejected the same as EQ.

The Selector's Refresh button re-scans the design for Strata Channel Strips. Use it after adding, renaming, or changing Script Access on a strip.

13.Control Pins

Every control on the panel is available as a control pin for UCIs, scripts, and schematic logic. Pins for optional modules (filters, gate, limiter, RTA, monitor) exist only while that module's Enable property is on.

A few panel button legends abbreviate their pin names: Copy Ch / Paste Ch = Copy Channel / Paste Channel, Bypass All = Channel Bypass, Monitor = Channel Monitor, HPF In / LPF In = HPF On / LPF On, and Flatten (2s) = Flatten EQ.

A few UCI-oriented controls are not placed on the panel but are still pins, listed under their internal names: disp_band_select (the focused band number as a value) and focus_type (the focused band's type as a dropdown).

Value ranges for custom controls

The plugin's time values are in seconds on the pin (the native DSP unit) - 0.01 means 10 ms. If you wire your own fader or text box to a time pin, set its Min/Max in seconds per the table below, and give it a time format so it displays ms/s:

Level and ratio pins use their displayed units directly: thresholds and ceiling -60 to +20 dB, gate/comp depth 0 to 60 dB, knee 0 to 24 dB, makeup -20 to +20 dB, ratio 1 to 100, band gain -18 to +18 dB, band Q 0.1 to 40, band frequency 10 Hz to 20 kHz.

14.Troubleshooting

Strip Selector problems

The Selector's status bar shows a message

  • Every Selector status string, and what to do about it, is in Link status

Selector buttons don't do anything

  • The grid is disabled while unlinked - check the Linked LED and the status bar first
  • Verify the Selector's Channel Count doesn't exceed the strip's Channels (buttons for channels the strip doesn't have select nothing useful)

Panel and graphs

Panel values or curves look out of date

  • Press Refresh in the header. External changes (snapshots, control systems, scripts writing pins) update the audio immediately but can leave the panel display stale until it re-pulls

The RTA spectrum disappeared on its own

  • The RTA idle timeout switched the spectrum off to save processing - press RTA on the EQ page to bring it back
  • Raise TIMEOUT (s) or turn Timeout off on the Config page if you want it to stay up unattended

A graph isn't animating

  • Check ACTIVE PAGE on the Config page. Which graph is live says which value animates which graph

Flatten doesn't do anything

  • Flatten requires a full 2-second press-and-hold; releasing early cancels on purpose
  • Once the demo has expired, Flatten is blocked like every other processing edit

Licensing and operations

Controls are grayed out and edits snap back

Status bar says "Paste skipped"

  • Paste skipped - clipboard empty: press a Copy button first
  • Paste skipped - no ... data in clipboard: you copied a different section (e.g. copied the compressor, pasted the gate)
  • Copy skipped - ... disabled or Paste skipped - ... disabled: that module isn't compiled in on this instance (check the Enable properties)

Activation code doesn't work

  • Verify the code matches the Core's Locking ID exactly - the format is ####-####-####
  • Everything else about codes, license states and redundant Core pairs is in Licensing

Debug output

When the Q-SYS debug console is available, the plugin logs its startup banner, license state, and warnings there. Set Debug_Level to Verbose for deeper diagnostics. The on-block debug button is enabled on all Fresh AV Labs plugins for field troubleshooting.

15.Known Issues

A custom row label accepted before 1.5.1 is renamed on upgrade

Versions before 1.5.1 accepted custom row labels that 1.5.1 rejects. When such a design is upgraded, that row falls back to CUS n and its pins are renamed to CUS n~Ch N. Anything connected to the old pin names comes loose.

Workaround: rename the row to a name that is not on the rejected list in Custom row labels, then reconnect. Rows left at the four defaults, CUS 1 through CUS 4, are not affected.
